11/03/2017 Twithching again - Bluethroat in Lincolnshire and Garganey in Hertfordshire

Saturday 11 March 2017

It was always going to be the best day to go twitching this weekend so I targeted the Bluethroat at Willow Tree Fen in Lincolnshire,
  • This turned out to be one of my easiest twitches.  Although the bird was not showing when I arrived, it didn't take long to put in an appearance.  Within 15 minutes it came out of the reeds in search of food and it showed well from less than 10 metres.  After a couple of minutes, it went back into the reeds via a large gap.  Not long after it came out again, ate a few mealworms and went back in.  About 15 minutes later it repeated the process - all of the time offering superb views to an assembled audience of 6 or 7.

Someone is obviously putting down mealworms each day to encourage the Bluethroat to leave the reeds.  This is probably why it has stayed so long - getting on for a month now.  Rumour has it that it is about to apply for a UK passport!

  • On the way home I called in at Wilstone Reservoir, near Tring to twitch the Garganey - 2 drakes and 2 females.

Good to be out and about on a lovely day!
