With Paul J and Group

 Saturday 11th February 2023

A cracking bird trip with Paul and Gareth James today.  We spent the morning at Fishbourne Creek, clocking up an impressive 50+ species, before relocating to West Dean Woods in the afternoon, where we ran up an equally impressive 30+ species.

 Fishbourne Creek

  • We got off to a flyer with great views of a greenshank and a spotted redshank in the same scope view.
  • Not long after we saw a couple of red-breasted mergansers.
  • A long way out were a female and a drake goldeneye.
  • The wallpaper was supplied by the Brent geese which were everywhere and making a racket as they flew - akin to a moving train!
  • A grey wagtail was a welcome addition to my 2023 list.
  • The place was alive with birds as shown in Gareth's eBird printout.

West Dean Woods

The afternoon session was just as impressive with some notable sightings.
  • Pride of place went to the 6+ hawfinches we saw on the way up to Monkton Farm
  • I saw my first mistle thrushes of 2023 - in the canopy of distant trees.
  • There were several red kites and ravens around in the skies above the hilltops.
  • There was also an impressive showing of fieldfare and redwing.

This was our first outing for well over a year - let's hope the next one is much sooner as this is a really good birding group.

Red-crested Pochard at Falmer

 Monday 6th February 2023

I found time to drop down to Falmer to twitch the Red-crested Pochard that has been around for a few days.

  • The bird was very obliging, coming within 10 metres - allowing me to take a picture on my iphone.

Birding in North Kent with Mark, Elizabeth and Martin

 Sunday 5th February 2023

We decided to do a 2-site visit to North Kent today, going to Reculver in the morning and then moving to Stodmarsh NNR for the afternoon session.

Reculver

The wind was quite strong, otherwise it was dry and sunny.

  • On the way to the site we saw a couple of Stock Doves on the roof of one of the cottages by the roadside.
  • We headed east from the car park for 1/2 mile or so and soon found the Snow Buntings that have been here since early December.  There were 8 in total and we spent some time enjoying ground views and flight views.

  • On the way back to the car park we saw a stunning Black Redstart on the rocks by the tower

  • Other birds of interest that we saw included several Kestrels, lots of Corn Buntings and Linnets.

Stodmarsh NNR

  • At Stodmarsh there was no sign of the Ring-necked Duck that had been reported earlier.
  • We did see a Treecreeper, several Marsh Harriers and, just before we left, there was a constant flow of Fieldfares over our heads.

Another good trip!

Sabines Gull in Hampshire

Wednesday 1st February 2023

There has been a Sabine's Gull at Langstone Harbour in Hampshire since 8th January 2023.  A number of my friends had been down to see it and they had all came back singing it's praises, commentating on how stunning it was.   I finally cracked and headed down to see it for myself today and boy was it worth the long car journey.  The gull showed well, initially on the ground but finally in flight.

  • A 1/4 mile walk east from the car park put me in prime position to see the gull.  It was the closest bird to me, barely 25 metres away, nestled on the ground and oblivious to me and 4 other birders.

  • After 20 minutes or so, some dog walkers came by and flushed the bird so we were able to see it flying around for a short while before it dropped to the ground again.

  • The strange feature of this sighting is that the Sabine's Gull appears to be still in breeding plumage, particularly with the black head.
  • This bird breeds in the Arctic and winters at sea in the Pacific or, in this case, in the Atlantic Ocean so the feeling is that it has met up with a storm, causing it to go off course and make a landing here on the south coast.

Weir Wood Reservoir

 Tuesday 31st January 2023

  • Saw my first marsh tit and nuthatch of 2023, at the feeders today at Weir Wood Reservoir

2023 species count = 111

  • I got to see my first green woodpecker of 2023 today as I walked my dog Odin on the land behind our house, having  previously heard several.
