RSPB Stodmarsh near Canterbury
17 of us, including 4 guests, enjoyed a great day at Stodmarsh , seeing or hearing 55 different species. After a misty start the sun broke through and the rest of the day was spent in glorious sunshine.
The highlights are listed below:
- On our way to the first hide - the Reedbed Hide - we were stopped in our tracks by a Nightingale singing away in the scrub a few metres away.
- Not long into our visit we saw our first Hobby flying overhead - the first of many sightings. We saw at least 7 in the sky simultaneously at one point.
- Marsh Harriers, by default, provided the power and glamour.
- There was a Cuckoo around too! We heard it several times but could not get a sighting.
- Hirundines were in short supply with several Swallows and only 2 or 3 House Martins. Thankfully we saw 20+ Swifts near the end of our walk.
- Pick of the passerines was the Blackcap.
No new birds or year ticks but a delightful place to visit.
Surprisingly we dipped on Turtle Dove!
