- Phil and I travelled up to Welney WWT for a guided tour by the Project Godwit team. Earlier this year project manager Hannah Ward gave a presentation to the East Grinstead RSPB Local Group and we both felt that a visit would be interesting. The tour was scheduled to run for one hour so we decided to take the opportunity to go round Welney WWT and then take in RSPB Nene Washes at Eldernell on our way home.
The guided tour was really interesting - full details of the project can be found by following the link below

Welney WWT
Although there were many birds at Welney, none were particularly rare. The highlights are listed below:- A couple of Whooper Swans were still around, one of which had chicks!
- The Tree Sparrows at the feeders are always a welcome sight here.
- A couple of Common Terns showed well in front of one of the hides.
- A lone Little Ringed Plover was also seen close to the hides.
RSPB Nene Washes at Eldernel
There were even fewer birds at Eldernell but there were a couple of really good ones:
- The Black-winged Stilt, seen yesterday, was not showing when we were there.
- A couple of Common Cranes showed well in the distance.
- A male Marsh Harrier put in a few appearances while we were there.
A great day out - well worth the trouble we had getting home after the M25 was closed at the junction with the A12.
