06/06/2018 Bits and Pieces

Churlwood, Ashdown Forest

2 Woodcock sightings and a churring Nightjar at my Churlwood patch made my day!

This maintained a 100% record here for these species since I started recording for the Ashdown Bird Group.

Old Lodge NR, Ashdown Forest

I joined Mark and Elizabeth for a very chilly, 05.30 start at Old Lodge.  Despite the cold we had a terrific couple of hours with sightings of all the usual suspects and a rather special species.
  • Redstarts were present in good numbers and were seen in several places around the reserve.
  • Tree Pipits were also in good form, cheering us up with their lovely song and appearing at the top of the trees at several points.
  • A good view of a Woodlark, near the end of our visit, capped a great pre-breakfast walk.

Other highlights included:-
  • The unique sounds of a Cuckoo.
  • Several Willow Warblers singing away in the background.
  • Several sightings of Whitethroats.
  • Stonechats showed well throughout our visit.

  • A surprise sighting of 25+ Common Crossbills was my personal favourite - my first success this year!

Well worth the early start!
