29/05/2019 At Broadwater Warren with the East Grinstead RSPB Local Group. Woodlark and Tree Pipit

Wednesday 29 May 2019
RSPB Broadwater Warren

Nine members and 2 guests had the privilege of a conducted tour of this rather special site.  Our host for the morning was Alan Loweth, a remarkable man who epitomises the very best of the RSPB volunteer movement. He has been at the forefront of developments here as they have converted huge chunks of woodland into heathland.

  • As we assembled in the car park a Blackcap sang beautifully.
  • Quite soon after heading to the heathlands to the east we heard, then saw, our first Woodlark.  It was at the top of an Oak tree but it soon took flight, hovering overhead much to the discomfort we elderly observers below!
  • Not long after we saw and heard a cracking Yellowhammer.
  • The bird I most wanted to see was a Tree Pipit and Alan promised me we would get one.  True to his word we heard, then saw, one on the western heathland.
  • At the end of our tour we came across a Tree Creeper which was obviously trying to build/repair a nest - almost certainly a second brood.
This is a really good reserve.
  • Nightjars are a speciality and with the open aspect you can expect superb views on a clear moonlight sky.
  • If you visit early in the year you will have a great chance of seeing Lesser-spotted Woodpecker.

Thanks Alan!
