A Rare Shrike - but which one?

Tuesday 30th May 2023

West Rise Marsh, Sussex

News came through about a rare shrike at West Rise Marsh - just 30 minutes away!  Martin was unavailable but local birder Paul E kindly agreed to let me use his Twitter images.

The bird was showing well on the fence by the reedbed as I arrived and it stayed in that area for the duration of my stay.  Sometimes it flew to the brambles nearby but it always returned to the same starting point.

It was a female bird, initially thought to be an Isabelline version but later the consensus was that it was a Turkestan or red-tailed version.
