Raptor Watch in Ashdown Forest

Thursday 21st July 2022

Ashdown Forest

This morning, Martin, John and I were in the company of birding royalty - our very own Alastair Gray and what a rewarding couple of hours we had with him in the sunshine..

  • It wasn't long before a goshawk showed up, flying over the valley below us.
  • Not long afterwards we got the first of 2 sightings of a honey buzzard and it glided gracefully in the distance.
  • All in all we saw 6 raptor species, including a red kite, at least 4 common buzzards, a kestrel and 3 hobbies.
  • Other species seen included a pair of stonechats, at least 25 swallows,  6 meadow pipits, a jay, a mistle thrush and a stock dove.
  • Pick of the butterflies was a delightful painted lady.

A splendid local outing!
