With the Hampshire Ornithological Society at St Catherine's Hill and Twyford Down

Sunday 5th September 2021

On the outskirts of Winchester in Hampshire

My third trip out with HOS saw me travel to Winchester to join 9 others including our leader Tom Jordan.  The weather was ideal with sunshine and a gentle breeze.  The focus was to look for migrants.

There was quite a lot of activity but nothing special in the way of birds.

  • Bird of the day was a Whinchat which conveniently flew to a position on a wire fence between 2 Wheatears to give a brilliant size comparison.
  • Most of the migrant birds we saw were either Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs or Whitethroats.

It was always going to be hard going today as there was a huge number of people around, drawn here by the excellent weather.
I quickly accepted the situation and enjoyed the walk.
It was the first time I had been in this area and one for me to come back to when there are fewer people around.
