25/04/2019 Twitching in Essex - Ortolan Bunting and Marsh Sandpiper

Abberton Reservoir, Essex

I couldn't resist the chance to go and see the Ortolan Bunting at Abberton Reservoir this afternoon.  After several sightings this morning, the news stopped coming out about the bird for several hours.  With this in mind I was mightily relieved to find that it was still there when I arrived at Billet's Farm just before 4.30 pm.

  • The Ortolan Bunting was moving in front of the fence line about 30 metres from us.  It gave great views but, annoyingly, it kept going behind the wire fence and disappearing over the top of the field and into the long grass behind.  It wasn't long before it reappeared and the cycle started over again!

What an absolutely gorgeous bird - a UK lifer for me, number 352!

  • By way of a sideshow, when the bunting went awol, we watched the Yellow Wagtails including the so called Channel Wagtail.

On the way home I had time to call in at RSPB Vange Marsh to see the Marsh Sandpiper which was showing well in the early evening light.
