Sussex Ornithological Society SOS Outing to Pett Level

 Wednesday, 5th March 2025

I made a rare appearance at an SOS outing this morning and thoroughly enjoyed myself.  Simon's report is copied in full below.

05 Mar 2025SOS mid-week walk at Pett Level

Not surprisingly given the spring-like weather this Wednesday, there was a good turn-out for the mid-week walk from Toot Rock eastward along the shingle bank. The light was perfect for viewing Pett Level but the glare made watching both the sea and shore quite difficult. Eighteen members joined the walk including some familiar faces and others new to me (including one new member visiting from Tennessee who managed to see quite a few firsts!). In total, we saw 50 species. I think everyone had good views of Mediterranean GullBrent GooseMarsh Harrier (at least two - photo of one), Grey PloverSnipe and Red-throated Diver. Many thanks to all those that turned up but especially to John Gowers who kept the log of sightings and helped find species for those on the walk.

  • The highlights for me today were the Mediterranean Gulls in the fields just ahead of us and the Brent Geese flying around us. Best on the sea were at least two Red-throated Divers that were quite close.

I can't wait for Simon's seawatching event on 4th May at Seaford!

2025 species count = 121

New Species:

120  Mediterranean Gull
121  Red-throated Diver
